This past Thursday, State Senator Andrew McDonald (D – Stamford) and Representative Michael Lawlor (D - East Haven), Chairmen of the Judiciary
Committee, introduced a bill (S.B. 1098) that if passed would force a radical reorganization of the legal, financial and administrative structure of the Catholic
Church and its parishes.

“This proposal is a slap in the face to our founding principles of separation of
Church and State and is a distraction from the business our lawmakers need
to be focused on – that is controlling spending and reducing the size of our
State Government,” states Norwalk Republican Town Committee Chairman Art Scialabba.

The Norwalk Republican Town committee is opposed to this bill as it is a direct assault on the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution, it would be discriminatory as it applies solely the Catholic Church and would be considered unconstitutional. It is a distraction to what is really needed, spending reform as the State of Connecticut is facing an ever-growing budget crisis that needs to be handled sooner rather than later.
